ICYMI: Todd Blanche Promises to Ban Abortion Nationwide, Even in States Where it is Legally Protected
Blanche’s private pledge goes far beyond promises made at public hearing
WASHINGTON, DC — In a private call with faith leaders last week, Todd Blanche, the Trump Administration's nominee to serve as Attorney General, promised to roll back access to abortion nationwide — even in states where it is currently legally protected.
In recorded audio, Blanche, who is expected to be confirmed by the Senate later this week, tells supportersthat under hisleadership, the Justice Department is “working hand in hand” with federal health agencies and the White House “so that the Dobbs decision becomes permanent in every single state.”
These comments go far beyond promises made at Blanche’s public confirmation hearings in July, and confirm that when it comes to abortion, the Trump administration is saying one thing and doing another. The same leaders who claim that abortion should be “left up to the states” are weaponizing federal power to ban abortion nationwide. Abortion bans are killing women across the country, and more lives will be lost as attacks continue.
New data from Reproductive Freedom for All and Impact Research find that Americans across the political spectrum are nearly as opposed to a national abortion ban as they are to middle class tax increases and sweeping cuts to Medicaid. Instead of addressing the challenges facing American families, Trump and Republican lawmakers are weaponizing federal agencies to launch deadly new attacks on access to reproductive health care.
In response to today’s reporting, Veronica Ingham, Managing Director for Free & Just released the following statement:
“Behind closed doors, Todd Blanche is bragging about his plans to ban abortion in every state across the country — even in places where it is currently protected under state law. The Attorney General has a duty to safeguard the rule of law and protect the integrity of the Department of Justice. Blanche’s comments confirm that he does not take these responsibilities seriously, and cannot serve in this critical role.”
