STATEMENT ROUND-UP: Abortion Patients, Providers, and Advocates Respond to Pro-Reproductive Freedom Majority in U.S. Senate

Free & Just looks forward to working with lawmakers to stand up to the Trump administration’s attacks on abortion and access to care.

WASHINGTON, DC –– Today, supporters of abortion access and reproductive freedom for all secured a majority in the U.S. Senate. Four years after the Dobbs decision, and after a year of new federal attacks on abortion access, Americans in communities across the country drew the line.

“The Senate just became the backstop. An FDA nominee who’s spent years calling medication abortion dangerous now has to get past a chamber that’s heard from the women these bans have hurt,” said Gowri Buddiga, Campaign Director, Free & Just. “We look forward to working with incoming senators to protect access to abortion.”

In response to a new pro-reproductive freedom majority in the Senate, patient advocates from across the country released the following statements:

Dana Peirce, Yarmouth, ME

“At 32 weeks pregnant, I had to fly from Maine to Colorado for care after my son’s diagnosis. I’ve told that story to anyone who’d listen ever since. "Now there's a majority that will fight to prevent others from experiencing that."

Erin Wolf, Falmouth, ME

“I tell my abortion story so the people responsible for abortion restrictions would hear what my family had to go through to receive compassionate care after making the heartbreaking decision to end our pregnancy in order to prevent a lifetime of suffering for our son. I’m proud to stand with my fellow Mainers who just sent the message: ‘Stand up to abortions bans.’”

Kaitlyn Kash, Austin, TX

“Texas has been the testing ground for the country’s most extreme abortion bans. They nearly killed me and have killed at least three other women. Texans know what it looks like when the government stops protecting patients. The rest of the country now has a Senate that won’t let it spread.”
