Free & Just looks forward to working with lawmakers to stand up to the Trump administration’s attacks on abortion and access to care
WASHINGTON, DC –– Today, supporters of abortion access and reproductive freedom for all secured a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Four years after the Dobbs decision, and after nearly two years of new federal attacks on abortion access, Americans in communities across the country drew the line.
"Whether it’s new restrictions on access to medication abortion or attempts to weaponize the federal government to target patients and providers, we know that the Trump administration will continue to attack access to abortion across the country, " said Gowri Buddiga, Campaign Director, Free & Just. “Free & Just looks forward to working with incoming lawmakers to stand up to these threats, and uplifting the voices of real people harmed by abortion bans.”
In response to a new pro-reproductive freedom majority in the House, patient advocates from across the country released the following statements:
“I was turned away from a hospital when I needed emergency abortion care, and my family still carries that. Tonight, families like mine aren’t on our own anymore,” said Darcy Houchin, a mom from PawPaw, Michigan who needed emergency abortion care in 2024 when her water broke 18 weeks into her pregnancy. Even though doctors informed her that an abortion was necessary to protect her health, Darcy was told that under Michigan state law, she would have to wait 24 hours before receiving the care she needed. Darcy was able to receive the care she needed after a state court issued a preliminary injunction suspending the waiting-period requirement.
“When I learned that my pregnancy was not viable, my heart broke. But, I knew what the right decision was for me, my son, and my family –– and I knew that there was no room for politicians in that choice," said Megan Kling, a mom from Taylor, Wisconsin who was forced to travel out-of-state for care when her baby was diagnosed with a rare and fatal condition. “To be faced with a devastating diagnosis in pregnancy and have no choice in your home state is ridiculous. And it needs to change. I have hope that the new majority in congress will strategically fight for abortion access.”
