“My family and I endured cruelty because of medically unnecessary abortion restrictions here in Michigan. We carry the trauma of that experience with us every single day. Our pain is compounded by every senseless new attack on reproductive freedom launched by politicians like Congressman Bill Huizenga,” said Darcy Houchin, a Mom from Paw Paw, Michigan, who is featured in the ad running in M1-03. “Abortion bans are killing women and causing generational harm to families across this country. I will continue to share my story and stand up to the lawmakers who think they know better than medical experts.”

Trump's FDA Pick was Chosen to Overrule America's Doctors

Heidi Overton called the fall of Roe "a huge victory for life" and pushed the FDA to ban access to medication abortion

WASHINGTON, DC –– President Trump is tapping Dr. Heidi Overton, the deputy director of his Domestic Policy Council, to run the Food and Drug Administration — the agency that decides which medications America's doctors are permitted to prescribe. Overton celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade as "a huge victory for life," dismissed federal legislation protecting abortion rights as "radicalism," and has promoted false claims about the safety of medication abortion that contradict more than two decades of evidence.

Mifepristone is a safe, effective FDA-approved medication used for early abortion and is now used in more than half of all abortions. Mifepristone is also recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) for use in miscarriage management. If left untreated, miscarriage can put women at risk for severe infection, infertility, or even death.

Before joining the White House, Overton was chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute, when the organization called on the FDA to reinstate in-person dispensing requirements for mifepristone, prohibit telehealth prescribing outright, and mandate in-person ultrasounds. She has also argued that the FDA, NIH, and CDC should be remade for failing to fund research aligned with conservative views.

She would inherit an agency with no confirmed leader since May, when Commissioner Marty Makary resigned under sustained pressure from anti-abortion groups who spent months publicly demanding he be fired for refusing to move faster on restricting mifepristone. The message to physicians is not subtle: the last FDA commissioner lost his job for failing to override the medical evidence fast enough, and the next one is walking in with the assignment already written.

What this nomination means for doctors and their patients:

• The FDA commissioner personally controls whether a physician may prescribe abortion medication by telehealth or must force every patient into an in-person visit. HHS ordered a review of the mifepristone REMS in September 2025 — the review Makary was pushed out over — and it would land on Overton's desk.

• The American Medical Association has been unequivocal: serious adverse events occur in fewer than one-third of one percent of patients, and continuing a pregnancy carries roughly 14 times the risk of death. Reimposing in-person requirements, the AMA warns, would eliminate telehealth for rural, low-income, and underserved patients and force doctors to deliver worse care.

• In February 2026, ACOG led a coalition of 15 medical organizations in defending mifepristone's safety record in court. There is no meaningful dispute among the physicians who actually prescribe this medication — only among the political appointees who want to take it away from them.

• Medication abortion accounted for 65% of all U.S. abortions, and more than one in four clinician-provided abortions were delivered by telehealth as of December 2025. A single decision by this FDA commissioner reaches into the exam room of every one of those patients.

• Doctors are already leaving. Idaho lost 35% of its obstetric providers between August 2022 and December 2024, and a March 2026 study in JAMA Network Open found applications to residency programs in ban states dropped 4.2% in a single cycle. A hostile FDA accelerates a physician shortage that is already measurable.

• This is not happening in isolation. On August 7, more than 30 anti-abortion organizations asked the attorney general to invoke the Comstock Act to halt the mailing of abortion medication nationwide. A friendly FDA commissioner is the other half of that strategy.

Her predecessor was forced out for refusing to move fast enough against a medication every major medical group calls safe. That is not a safety review. We will make sure the Senate hears it before a single vote is cast.”

Bottom Line: The FDA commissioner does not just regulate medication — she decides whether your doctor is allowed to give it to you. Trump has chosen a nominee whose central qualification for the job is her willingness to say no.

New Data: Pregnant & Hours From the Nearest Doctor, The Real Cost of GOP Health Care Cuts

2.4 million women of reproductive age live in a maternity care desert

WASHINGTON, DC –– This week, March of Dimes released a new report that spotlights how Medicaid cuts are forcing women to travel hours to receive maternal and reproductive care. Right now, labor and delivery units are closing their doors and hospitals are shutting down due to Medicaid cuts from the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress.The latest data from Reproductive Freedom for All and Impact Research finds that Americans across the political spectrum are nearly as opposed to a national abortion ban as they are to middle class tax increases and sweeping cuts to Medicaid: 

• More than 74 million Americans rely on Medicaid for health care, including essential reproductive services like birth control, wellness exams, sexually transmitted infection tests and treatment, breast and cervical cancer screenings.

• Medicaid provides coverage for nearly 1 in 4 rural residents, including 23.3% of women of childbearing age living in rural areas. 

• Medicaid covers nearly half of all rural births and provides essential financial stability to the hospitals and clinics that rural areas rely on to access care.

“I had an abortion 9 years ago. It was my first pregnancy. My husband and I were filled with an easy joy in those early days, a feeling that would never again be replicated with my subsequent pregnancies. The first warning sign came after some testing at 12 weeks. Being a doctor myself, I should have realized that getting a call from your OB about test results may not bode well,” said Anusha Viswanathan, a Bucks County pediatrician who sought abortion care after her baby was diagnosed with a fatal fetal condition. “The diverse circumstances that lead people to seek abortions illustrate the need for reproductive freedom. It is gut-wrenching and infuriating that people like me need to be flayed open, the contents of our life stories examined for veracity and worth. But we are here, at this moment. Instead of addressing the challenges facing American families, Republicans cannot get past the A word.  Abortion. Instead of advancing women’s health care, they are working to ban abortion nationwide and violate our personal privacy. You do not need tragic circumstances like mine to get an abortion.  But with abortion restrictions, tragedies will be the inevitable consequence.”

“When abortion access is attacked and denied, people are forced into impossible situations. Their health, safety, privacy, economic stability, and sometimes their lives are all put at risk,” said Veronica Anna Rae, the Director of Development at the Abortion Liberation Fund of Pennsylvania, which has helped 500 people access care since April alone. “We are here to make one thing clear: the people of Pennsylvania deserve to have their stories heard. We deserve access to reproductive health care that is not only protected, but truly affordable and accessible in practice. And those who represent us should listen to patients, listen to families, and understand what is at stake for our communities.”

“I experienced a medical emergency right here in Central Pennsylvania. Patients are not getting the care they need with a doctor who understands their individual medical problems,” said Jessica St. Clair, a local professor who was denied abortion medication after experiencing a miscarriage during her first pregnancy. St. Clair was forced to wait two weeks and ultimately required emergency surgery to remove the tissue her body had not passed. I am telling this story because I believe neighbors across Pennsylvania deserve better than this. We deserve health care decisions made by doctors, grounded in medicine and compassion, not dictated by rigid rules that treat every patient’s most painful moment the same way. We deserve access to safe, timely care without worrying about the bill that follows. And we deserve a health care system that trusts patients and the doctors who care for them.”

Blanche’s confirmation follows reports that he privately promised supporters that he would work to make “the Dobbs decision permanent in every single state.” These comments go far beyond promises made at Blanche’s public confirmation hearings in July. and This means that patients everywhere, including in places where state law largely protects access to abortion, could lose access to care. Abortion bans are already killing women in states like Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina. With  Blanche and anti-abortion extremists hellbent on weaponizing federal agencies to ban abortion, more lives will be lost.

61 Years of Medicaid: Pregnant Patients and Rural Communities Suffer from Sweeping Health Care Cuts Under Trump and Republican Lawmakers

Labor and delivery units are closing their doors leaving families vulnerable

WASHINGTON, DC –– Today marks the 61st anniversary of Medicaid being signed into law. The program is a lifeline for pregnant patients, working families, and rural communities across the country who need comprehensive health care — including reproductive care. Despite Medicaid’s critical role in making health care accessible to millions of Americans, the Trump administration gutted funding for the program. As a result, rural hospitals are shutting down at record rates and labor and delivery units are closing their doors, putting women and families at greater risk in communities already facing severe health care disparities.

Not only have Republicans weakened our health care system, and cut vital programs like Medicaid, but Republicans in Congress are passing policies that drive up costs for everyday Americans. Notably, polling shows that Americans in the battleground overwhelmingly oppose cuts to Medicaid and nearly 70% of Americans in the battleground support access to Medicaid.

ICYMI: U.S. District Court Judge Rejects Baseless Restrictions on Medication Abortion Amid Ongoing Extremist Efforts to Ban Access Nationwide

Court notes restrictions on care are “arbitrary and capricious”

WASHINGTON, DC –– On Friday, a U.S. district judge in Virginia rejected baseless restrictions on access to medication abortion, ordering the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reconsider their ongoing attacks on safe and effective medication. This is only the latest turn in a relentless tug-of-war over access to the most popular form of abortion care nationwide, sowing confusion for the patients who depend on this medication and the providers working to prescribe it. 

Abortion medication is currently used in nearly two-thirds of abortions across the country; restricting access to medication abortion could eliminate care for 64.5 million people. While medication abortion remains available today, patients and providers are forced to navigate a complex and ever-changing legal landscape as extremists continue efforts to chip away at access to care. 

Friday’s decision comes ahead of oral arguments scheduled for September in Louisiana v. FDA, a  Fifth Circuit case where the court will weigh whether to reinstate old FDA restrictions blocking patients from getting mifepristone by mail or from a pharmacy. Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily paused a ruling from the Fifth Circuit in the same case that sought to prohibit patients from receiving abortion medication by mail or at a pharmacy after being prescribed the pill through telemedicine. The Supreme Court’s decision temporarily preserved access to mifepristone. 

Punting the case back to the Fifth Circuit not only leaves the door open for another unfavorable ruling on mifepristone, but also gives cover to anti-abortion extremist politicians just months before the midterms.

Meanwhile, patients and providers are forced to navigate a complex and ever-changing legal landscape.
